2017 SPRING RALLY

Thursday March 30 to Sunday April 2
17200 Termini-San Luis Pass Rd
Galveston, TX  77554

Information from the park website:

All inclusive 30 , 50 amp, water, cable TV, Wifi, 2 Pool, Indoor Infinity Spa, Hot tub, Playground for the kids, clubhouse . All concrete pads with grass lawns and palm trees. Rated by Trailer Life as one of the top rated parks in North America. We are also

Rated 10/10/10 Good Sam 2014 and 2015,  as well as, AAA approved. The Jamaica Beach RV park is also located directly across the street from the beautiful sandy beaches of the Gulf here in Galveston Island.

We currently have 15 spaces reserved for us. Any spaces that we do not have booked by Thursday March 23, 2017 we will release.  We need a minimum of ten rigs to be able to use the rally room and therefore to conduct the rally.   When Stephanie last checked with Jamaica Beach we had five rigs registered: Clyburn, Day, Horton, Blake, and Borgman.  Please call the park at the phone number above to reserve your space.  According to what I know the Jensens and the Duncans also have reservations at the Park and the Bells are definitely planning to go and may also have made their reservation this week.  That would mean that we currently have eight of the required ten minimum.
There are three different rate categories and the park will assign you to the correct category based on the space they assign to you.
Here's the rate chart.  All spaces are pull through with full hook ups.  Our use of the clubhouse is our benefit rather than a special "rally rate."

Winter

This price includes a -10% for Good Sam, Trailer life, Taco, Military and senior discount and includes Tax.

Weekday:                       Standard  $39.70      Deluxe  $41.70      Premium  $44.70

Weekends:                     Standard  $45.20      Deluxe   $47.20     Premium  $50.20

This rate is for 2 people: extra adults  $5 Child (age 4 - 15) $3   //  3 and under free
1 vehicle allowed per site, each additional vehicle is $10.00 per site/per stay

Thursday night you can participate in the Park potluck or you can eat out.  Following the Park potluck we will meet in the Rally room to conduct any necessary business and collect the rally fees which will be $25 per person.  The fee includes $10 for the guided tour or the Bryan Museum as well as $15 for Chapter 10 treasury which we use to cover expenses and finance our donations to CARE.  Following this Meet and Greet we will have our usual fun and games, ie. visiting, Wizard, Hand & Foot, Mexican Train, etc.

Friday breakfast and lunch are on your own.  During discussion at the February monthly meeting it was decided that we would not have a Men's Breakfast due to the logistics involved with folks coming directly to Galveston from Escapade in Arizona and no one being available to bring our chapter trailer.  At 1:15 pm we will gather to go to the Bryan Museum for our 2 pm tour.  The tour will take an hour to an hour and a half after which it is suggested that we allow another hour to explore those exhibits that caught your attention during the tour.  The gift shop is also said to have many interesting and unusual items.  We will have LEO (Lets Eat Out) on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm at Fisherman's Wharf.  This restaurant has plenty of onsite parking and they will validate for their customers.  (If you are not familiar with Galveston this area is also where you will come if you want to see the Great Storm and other films, tour the tall ship Elissa and her museum, or tour a drilling platform.)  After our early dinner we'll make our way back to the park for another evening of good fellowship.

You can eat breakfast at the park on Saturday for $4 or you can eat on your own. The day has been left free for you to do as you like.  Stay at the park and play miniature golf, float on the lazy river or walk across the Blue Water Highway and dip your toes into the Gulf of Mexico.  Go back into town and shop or do all things tourist.  There is too much to see and do in one weekend so be sure to make a list of things to do on your next visit.  A gas grill is available for our BYOM (Bring Your Own Meat) BBQ on Saturday night starting at 5:30 pm.  Besides your meat please bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to share.  Cook if you like or feel free to pick something up at Kroger or one of the island delis or bakeries.  We don't want anyone missing the fun because they felt like they had to actually cook something!  Chapter 10 will supply ice and cold beverages, condiments, salad dressings, and paper towels.  Don't forget to bring your own table service; paper, plastic, or pottery - doesn't matter to us.  Just be sure you have a plate to put it on and cutlery to eat with.  A tumbler or mug is also a good idea.  After dinner there will again be time for gathering in the Rally room for fun and games.

Sunday morning there will be pastries available for our hitch-up breakfast.  We wish we didn't have to leave, but another rally is coming in right behind us.

https://www.thebryanmuseum.org/

The Bryan Museum has only been open for a year or so.  We will have a guided tour that is typically an hour and a half long.  Admission is $10 for Seniors and $12 for Adults.  The reviews are very good and the history of the building is unique.

The film about the Storm of 1900 has been digitally upgraded to HD so even those who saw it years ago may be impressed at the detail of the images.  It is less than 30 minutes, but there is a second film (additional admission) about Jean Laffite that alternates with The Storm of 1900 and between the two the theater would take about an hour.  Each film is $6 per person so $12 for both.
As mentioned above the tall ship Elissa is docked next to Fisherman's Wharf and there is also a oil drilling rig that has been set up for touring.
We will try to have packets for you from the Chamber of Commerce.  You may wish to tour the Bishop's Palace, Moody Gardens, the Moody Mansion, Pleasure Pier, the Opera House, the Railroad Museum, Lone Star Flight Museum, Schlitterbahn, the Strand, and much more.  Ride the free ferry at the east end of the island over to Bolivar Peninsula.  Dolphins frequently escort the ferry and while you're on the peninsula there are several great birding spots.  As you drive around town you will see sculptures carved from trees killed by the salt water intrusion of the flooding from Hurricane Ike.  Many are the work of James Phillips who exhibits at the Rene Wiley Gallery.

Tell them you are with the Chapter 10 group under Stephanie Borgman when you make reservations.

Information from Stephanie on the three rate structures:

Here's the rate chart.  All spaces are pull through with full hook ups.  I am assuming (bad thing, I know) that the price difference is based on size and location.  I believe the Premium sites are all brand new.  My guess is that they are close to the new "lazy river."  The Standard and Deluxe sites are probably a matter of size and may or may not include amenities like a fire ring, bbq, picnic table, etc.  Our use of the clubhouse is our benefit rather than a special "rally rate."

We will probably have one group event away from the park and enjoy the amenities at the park or travel individually or in small groups for other activities.   If you have strong preferences on anything regarding the schedule let Stephanie know before she finalizes the agenda. Stephanie: randsborgman@gmail.com We will set the rally fee when we finalize the agenda.  Time  for gathering in the Rally room for games of Wizard, Mexican Train, visiting with each other or other games will also be on the agenda.

My initial research a month or more back showed what looked like some reasonable hotel rates but there must be a convention or something going on that has all of the rates raised. I thought I was going to stay at the Day's Inn but that is not an option:

Days Inn    SOLD OUT Friday and Saturday night

8712 Seawall Blvd,
Galveston, TX 77554
(409) 740-3000
located 9.8 miles (14 min) from the park.
The Google quoted price $42.  Price quoted on phone much higher ($91?)

Other hotels nearby which are in the vicinity of the Day's Inn

Comfort Suites
3606 89th St., Galveston  Google quoted normal price $74 Now $173
(409) 741-9977

Holiday Inn Express

8628 Seawall Blvd Google Quoted normal Price $79 Now $121
(409) 740-7900

Note:  When I entered the address of the RV resort into Google Maps from the Park website it provided the wrong location.  Searching for Jamaica Beach RV Park it gave a slightly differently address:   17200 Termini-San Luis Pass Rd vice 17200 FM 3005

Possible Outings

The selection below provides some of the attractions/outings that Stephanie is considering for our Rally.  If you have any input or strong feelings about any of these please email Stephanie at randsborgman@gmail.com Note: Stephanie often asks for input and often gets the feedback that whatever she decides is fine because she always does a good job.

The two links are for the attractions we are considering.  We can go to one or both.  In order to get group pricing we have to have at least 10 people.  We could do the Bryan Museum on Friday afternoon then have dinner and leave Saturday for individual activities.  Or we could go to an early lunch at Fisherman's Wharf on Pier 21 on Saturday and then next door for the film and time to explore before returning to Jamaica Beach for our BYOM BBQ.  Doing either or both still leaves the evenings free for cards or whatever else anyone wants to do.

The Bryan Museum has only been open for a year or so.  We will have a guided tour if we guarantee a group of ten that is typically an hour and a half long.  Admission is $10 for Seniors an $12 for Adults.  The reviews are very good and the history of the building is unique.  Groups that have visited here often go to Bubba Gump's at the Pleasure Pier for lunch or dinner.  If we only do one activity this is our preference.

Each film is $6 per person so $12 for both, but a group discount is available.  If we go here we would go to Fisherman's Wharf for lunch and then anyone who wanted could go to the Elissa (1877 Tall Ship) and her museum next door or explore The Strand historical district.

HOT DOG FEED and AUCTION - GREAT SUCCESS

We had a very successful Hot Dog Feed and auction on Friday (1/13/2017) at the Activity Center.  My personal thanks to all the people who worked so hard to make this all work and for everyone that participated.  From the people doing the procurement of the food and supplies to the auction team that included the auctioneer, helper, runners, and the ladies recording bids.   Everyone did a great job.

We had some very generous donors and bidders for the auction.

Thanks also to the people that helped to set up and clean up the Activity Center for this event and those who helped to prepare and serve the food.

Stephanie Borgman, our Wagonmaster made a presentation about our upcoming Spring Rally.  People are free to make reservations on their own directly with the Jamaica Beach RV Resort.   The rally is from Thursday March 30th through Sunday April 2nd.

We had a presentation by Lynda Hardin-Poston who is working to put together a cast  for a reality television show involving senior RVers.  A group meet with Lynda following the auction to discuss the venture further.

The photo shows our auction helper serving as a model wearing the Wizard of Oz Dorothy wig that was up for auction.

This event left me with a strong sense of community with people coming together for an enjoyable afternoon.
